"Your Submarine" is just one of those songs that you feel so very fortunate that the songwriting gods gave you to write. It all started with a young unmarried woman I knew that I became very close to in a very strange way. On the surface she had let's say a very "summer girl" personality, but "down deep" she had a lot going on. She was definitely one of "those girls that no one really knows." In the winter she'd come in for work as a barista dressed in these big black rubber snow boots and old bright plaid retro wool coats. It was like she was hiding in those boots and clothes. Anyhow one night I was playing "Paint It Black" on my guitar which has the line "...dressed in their summer clothes I have to turn my head until my darkness goes..." Then everything came together in my head "I see those summer girls dressed in their winter clothes, you know the ones that no one really knows" and her future lover saying to her "I want to be your submarine, take you down deep make you feel like you're living in a dream."
