“Illuminated" is the result of seeing a number of women out at night, looking at their phones with a level of engagement that is only slightly greater than their nearly total disinterest in their surroundings and whoever it is that they are there with. That unengaged, distant look has existed forever between people, but now people have their phones to reach for in one last desperate effort to engage with the universe. But something to engage with usually isn't there on their phone either. But every once in a while a woman with that distant expression, "Illuminated" by her phone, looks so striking beautiful and poignant at the same time, you wish you could figure out a way to engage with them.
